Sheila Markin Nielsen imageSheila Markin Nielsen is a leader in the field of career counseling. She began her practice over twenty-five years ago counseling attorneys and now works with a wide variety of clients from new graduates to seasoned professionals.

Ms. Nielsen specializes in career direction issues including early career choice, midlife career change, re-entry to the job market, and late career issues. She was a career columnist for Illinois Legal Times for four years and contributed to two books: Breaking Traditions, and Living with the Law: Strategies to Avoid Burnout and Create Balance.

In 2011 the American Bar Association published Job Quest for Lawyers: the Essential Guide to Finding and Landing the Job You Want. Ms. Nielsen has been an invited speaker at over 80 venues including NALP, ABA, NAWL and many law schools and bar associations. She has written over 90 articles and counseled over 3,500 clients. She has done webinars for Lexis Nexis and the American Bar Association. Most recently she has repurposed her book on job search to make it more useful for professionals and new graduates: Job Quest: How to Become the Insider Who Gets Hired will be available on Amazon in April 2015. The book contains many illustrations from her practice working primarily with attorneys.

Sheila Nielsen is both a trained social worker and attorney.  She received her master's degree in social service from Bryn Mawr in 1973 and her law degree from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law in 1977. After law school she worked as a criminal prosecutor for six years, first, in state court in Philadelphia and Chicago and then as an assistant united states attorney in Chicago. She tried hundreds of cases in state court and had twelve jury trials in federal court and argued about fifteen appeals before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 1983 Ms. Nielsen convinced the U.S. Attorney’s Office to allow her to work a reduced schedule after the birth of her first child. In 1983 she also became one of the founders of the Part-Time Lawyer’s Network of the Chicago Bar Association. She chaired that group until 1988. From 1988 to 1990 Ms. Nielsen was the executive director of the national organization, Lawyers for Alternative Work Schedules. In 1990 Ms. Nielsen developed her own counseling and coaching business, Nielsen Career Consulting. She assists clients to assess career path options, to deal with difficult workplace situations, to conduct productive job searches, to prepare for difficult interviews, and much more. Ms. Nielsen also assists large and mid-sized law firms with outplacement and executive coaching needs for their partners and associates including Sidley, Kirkland, Jenner, Chapman, Schiff, Much Shelist, Grippo, Vedder and others.

Ms. Nielsen received an award from the Part-Time Lawyer’s Network of the Chicago Bar Association for her commitment to alternative work options. Ms. Nielsen received the Outstanding Alumni Leadership Award from her alma mater, Lake Forest College, for her contribution to the field of career counseling and coaching.
